Located in the 8th arrondissement of Paris, the Madeleine neighbourhood is the 31st administrative district of Paris. To the east, it is bounded by the 1st and 9th arrondissements, while to the west, north and south, it borders the Faubourg Saint-Honoré, Europe and Champs-Élysées neighbourhoods.

History

The Madeleine area owes its name to the eponymous church situated in the Place de la Madeleine and built between 1763 and 1842. The construction of this edifice encountered major disruptions, particularly for political reasons that forced the builders to redo the church’s plans several times. Until 1722, this area was a peaceful hamlet called Ville-l’Évêque, which later gave its name to the street of Ville-l’Évêque.

Cultural sites

The Madeleine district houses many landmarks, including Rue du Faubourg-Saint-Honoré, which includes, inter alia:

 

  • Hôtel de Charost: Since 1814, this has been the residence of the British Ambassador in France.
  • Palais de l’Élysée: Formerly a private mansion, the palace is now the French president’s official residence.

The Madeleine district brings together history and modernity thanks to its architectural heritage, which continues to improve and evolve over time. It offers many activities to entertain its residents:

 

  • The swimming pools of the Union Interalliée and the Automobile Club de France: These are the two most beautiful swimming pools in the capital.
  • Théâtre de la Madeleine (Madeleine Theatre): Founded in 1924, it was a great success one year after its opening thanks to Marcel Pagnol’s play Les Marchands de gloire.

Parks

  • Jardins des Champs-Élysées: covering 137,520 m², the gardens of the Champs-Élysées were once a simple marshy landscape. From the 17th century onwards, this large green space began to be redeveloped by Queen Marie de Medici. It was bought in 1828 by Paris City. These gardens are now made up of several rectangular spaces known as “squares”.
  • Square Louis XVI: The only public place bearing the name of this king, the park includes an expiatory chapel built in memory of the monarch and his wife, Marie-Antoinette. The mainly white flowers in this park include lilacs, Mexican orange trees and oleanders. This place is accessible at Madeleine station by metro lines 8, 12 and 14 and at Saint-Augustin station by line 9.
